Pastel (Indonesian Style Fried Calzone)

Have you ever had a busy day and you live by yourself and feeling lazy to go out or cooking food for your dinner or supper? I think this food will be perfect for you. This is Indonesian style fried calzone. If you don’t know what calzone is you can see it here.

FYI, in Indonesia we eat a lot of carbohydrate. We can eat rice with fried noodle and potato pancake. Very nice, eh? So it’s the same case here as well. Main ingredients in this recipe are potatoes and flour. For you who doesn’t like carbohydrate I suggest you not to waste you time reading the recipe.

First step here is ingredients (for 24 pieces),

For the filling:

4 medium size potatoes

2 carrots

2 spring onion

1 onion

2 cloves of garlic

4 eggs

50 grams glass noodle / bean vermicelli / rice vermicelli

Salt and pepper

For pastry:

500 grams AP flour

1 egg

1,5 dl water

100 grams butter

2 tbsp oil

How to:

-Hard boiled the eggs, set aside

-Boiled glass noodles for 3 minutes, set aside

-Cut potatoes, carrots and onion into small dice. Thinly sliced spring onion. And crushed garlic.

-In a hot pan, add garlic and onion until the smell nice. Add potatoes and carrots.

-After potatoes and carrots are cooked, you can add spring onion and glass noodles.

-Add salt and pepper to your taste. Ste aside, let it cool down before you can wrap it with the pastry.

Pastry (How to):

-Mix all ingredients in a bowl.

-Knead it with your hands until smooth and you can form a ball from it. But for lazy person like me, i used stand mixer to knead the dough, much easier and less work of course.

-Let it sit and rest for at least 15 minutes before you use it.

Wrapping:

As for this stage I can’t really explain how to do it. Instead I have a step by step pictures.

If you can’t do the twisting you can use fork to seal the edges properly, so it won’t burst when you fry it.

Now you just need to deep fry it . Around 2 to 3 minutes each side. Or until golden brown.

Or maybe you can bake it as well (I’m not sure, never tried before). If you try to bake this and it worked, please let me know πŸ™‚

    Hi Miss,
I love this cake when I had a chance to try it in Indonesia.
I asked for the name of this and would like to make it but I do not like to fry it.
Can I bake it? Have you tried this way?
Thank you for your detailed receipe!

    • Hello, I’m sure you can bake it too, but it won’t taste the same. I think the pastry will be a bit hard though, you can otherwise use other type of pastry for the skin. Never tried before, but maybe..
