Tilapia in Spicy Sauce and Spiced Yellow Broth

There’ll be two recipes in this post. One made by me and the other one made by my younger sister. These are the recipes from when I was in Indonesia. I wrote about it in the post here.

I always find it slightly tricky to cook spicy foods at home. Because my daughter can’t eat spicy food (obviously) and husband prefers something not spicy too. At the end if I want to cook something spicy it’ll only be for me. And to be honest, I don’t really like cooking for my self. So the only option is having chilli sauce ready all the time.

Different case at my parents’ house. Everyone likes spicy food. And they can’t just live with chilli sauce. The food it self has to be spicy too. So almost everyday we cook 2 different foods with the same main ingredients. And this time is fish.

I have to admit that my sister could probably be a better cook than me. When I was her age (21 years old), I had to check and look for recipes before cooking. But she’s different. She just know. I don’t know how. Even I have to ask the recipe for the fish in spiced yellow broth from her.

Here is my sister in a dress that she made by herself. This was taken after my cousin’s wedding reception.

She’s not a chef and never take any cooking lessons. In fact, she’s actually a tailor. She made some dresses for the whole family. And the latest dress she made for me was the one I was wearing at my cousin’s wedding. Very pretty dress but I couldn’t bring it with me here to Sweden for the sake of Indonesian dry goods (yes, they’re that important compare to the dress) ๐Ÿ˜›

Okay, enough bragging about my younger sister (I have 2 sisters). The youngest sister will be jealous if she found out ๐Ÿ˜€ Now, let’s get back to the recipe.

Tilapia in Spicy sauce

Tilapia in Spicy Sauce

  • Servings: 2-3
  • Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • whole tilapia (around 1.5kg)
  • 3 garlic cloves, sliced
  • 2 stalks spring onion, sliced
  • 3 tomatoes, wedged
  • 2 big green chilies, sliced
  • 3 bird eye chilies, sliced
  • water
  • oil
  • salt & pepper

How to:

  • Prepare oil in a deep pan for deep frying.
  • When the oil is hot enough (around 180C) deep fry tilapia until crispy and slightly brown. Take out from the pan and set aside.
  • In another pan, add around 3 tbsp oil, saute garlic and chilies until fragrance.
  • Add around 500ml water , tomato and green onion. Bring it to the boil.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste. Add the fish in. Turn down the heat and let it simmer for 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Turn off the heat. Serve with warm rice.

Tilapia in Spiced Yellow Broth

  • Servings: 2-3
  • Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • whole tilapia (around 1 kg)
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 3 shallots / 1 small red onion
  • 1 stalk lemon grass, crushed
  • 3 cm galangal, crushed
  • 1 cm turmeric
  • 3 tomatoes, wedged
  • 1 salam leaf (it’s ok to skip it if you don’t have it)
  • water
  • oil
  • salt & pepper

How to:

  • In a food processor, place shallots, garlic and turmeric to turn them into a smooth thick paste.
  • In a deep pan, add around 3tbsp oil and saute the yellow paste until fragrance. Add crushed galangal, lemon grass and salam leaf. Cook for another 30 seconds.
  • Add water (around 1 liter), stir well and bring it to the boil.
  • Add the fishes to the broth and let it simmer for 13 to 15 minutes or until the fish is done.
  • Add tomato wedges, salt and pepper to taste.
